ASSU HAS URGED FG to pay or else..by Inah richard

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has urged the Federal Government to pay the outstanding arrears of its members not later than July, 2017. The ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, stated this during a news conference at the University of Abuja on Wednesday. Ogunyemi said that ASUU insisted on a framework for paying any part of the “Earned Academic Allowances” (EAA) arrears. According to him, the Federal Government is owing academics in federal universities unpaid allowances of not less than N128 billion. He explained that the executive arm of government initially insisted that there would be no further release of funds to the universities until there was a forensic audit. “In view of this, the union rose from its NEC meeting at the Bayero University Kano observing that the particular issue of EAA cannot be meaningfully addressed unless within an agreed framework. “Hence the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU resolved that all outstanding arrears of EAA shou

Senate fights dirty, says Customs boss unfit for office, condemns AGF by inah richard

Senate fights dirty, says Customs boss unfit for office, condemns AGF – The Senate has come down heavily on the Comptroller-General of Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali (rtd) saying he is unfit to hold public office and should therefore resign his appointment. The Senate also barely fell short of calling for the resignation of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, for asking the Red Chamber to stay all actions in the face-off between it and Col. Ali since the matter had been already been taken before a court of law. The law-making body however roundly condemned the chief law officer and advised President Muhammadu Buhari to call him to order. The Senate has been embroiled in a face-off with the Customs boss over the refusal of the latter to wear uniform in appearance before the former which requested for a briefing on the now suspended policy of retroactive collection of duties on vehicles imported into the count

Lagos doctor fell into lagoon

ARE YOU OKAY? The sad news of the man who ran out of his car and jumped into the Lagos lagoon has been all over the internet since yesterday. It's an unfortunate incident but one thing I have come to know is that being suicidal does not just jump at someone. It takes a process except maybe the witches from your village have gotten you (that was a comic digression). When thought and worry get to the point of hopelessness, suicide comes next. An old Yoruba adage says 'when there is life, there is hope' but I disagree. I am of the opinion that when there is hope, there is life. Hope is that path filled with some possibility of fulfilment. It is what expectations are centred on. For many people today, irrespective of their wealth status, hope is the only thing keeping them alive. I've heard someone say hope is not a performance and weakens people's resolve to go the extra mile. Though that is true to some extent, I still think of hope as the only thing some people have
